Food loss is a term used to describe the loss that occurs when food that is still edible is thrown away.
Toyokoseiseiyakusyo has been conducting research on various ingredients in Okinawa Prefecture
since the 1990s and learned that many of the "sea grapes" that are known as Okinawa's specialty are being disposed of.
Looking for ways to contribute as a pharmaceutical company,
we have established an Okinawa local project team to solve this food loss problem.
After about 5 years of trial and error, we have successfully extracted an extract
that can be used as a raw material for cosmetics from discarded sea grapes.
From manufacturing to naming, design, copyright, advertising, and distribution for specific commercialization,
the Okinawa local project team became in charge, and created a system in
which a portion of the sales of cosmetics would be returned to the sea grape industry in
Okinawa Prefecture as well as contributes to stable income for sea grape producers.
Kazumi Miyoshi is looking after the cultivation of sea grapes in Henza, Uruma City.
The idea for cosmetics using sea grapes was born from an episode told by Mr.Miyoshi, "An elderly woman who applied sea grapes to her hands made her skin shiny."

Meeting Mr.Taira was an opportunity for us to learn about the problems facing sea grapes.
